The past continuous tense

describes actions or events in a time in the past, which began in the past and were still going on when another event happened. It is also called past progressive. It refers to a specific time in the past in which the action was taking place and was interrupted by another action.

For example, I was driving when you called me.

  • to describe an unfinished action that was interrupted by another event or action, e.g. “I was listening to a beautiful song when my laptop hanged.
  • with ‘wonder’, to make a very polite request: e.g. “I was wondering if you could help me to move out today.”

Examples

  • They were playing soccer when the light went out
  • Mark was crossing the street when the car hit him.
  • When we arrived he was eating lunch.
  • I was taking a shower when she arrived.

Note: with verbs not normally used in the continuous form, the simple past is used.
